A third of the homes here were built before 1980 and the median year built is 1987, against 2005 up in our own town. That is a completely different job. Up the interstate we are usually removing a house's first system; here we are often removing its second or third, into ductwork that has been modified twice, with a furnace closet sized for equipment nobody makes any more. The interesting problems are here, and so are the ones where the honest answer is that the duct system, not the equipment, is what is wrong.
The city is its own electric utility
Electric service inside the city limits comes from the city's own board of lights and water rather than from an electric membership corporation or the statewide investor-owned utility. That matters for one specific and very practical reason: equipment rebates and tune-up vouchers in this region are administered by the utility, not by the county or the state, and they differ by provider. Two houses on either side of the city line can be eligible for different programs for identical work. Fewer than half the homes here are owner-occupied
Owner-occupancy runs about forty-seven percent — the lowest of anywhere we work, and roughly half the figure at the north end of our area.
